Applications of Platen Presses

Platen presses are versatile machines widely used in the manufacturing of rubber, composites, and other materials like wood and plastic.
Platen presses are versatile machines widely used in the manufacturing of rubber, composites, and other materials like wood and plastic. They consist of heated, flat plates that apply pressure and heat to mold materials into desired shapes and forms.

Composites

For composite materials, including metal and plastic, platen presses ensure uniform bonding and molding, creating strong, lightweight components that meet the high standards of industries like aerospace, automotive, and consumer goods.

Wood Forming

In wood forming, platen presses provide the control and consistency needed to shape wood products, enabling efficient production of everything from furniture to building materials with precision and minimal waste.

Rubber Molding

Platen presses are essential in rubber molding, offering the precise pressure and heat required to shape rubber into durable, high-quality components used across industries, from automotive to industrial applications.

Raw Materials

Ordering and Inspection
Raw materials are ordered from steel mills according to the specifications required. Before being shipped to our facility, the materials undergo Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to ensure material quality.

Arrival and Testing
Upon arrival, each batch of materials is sampled. The heat numbers are UT inspected and chemically tested to verify that they match the mill’s provided information.

03

Gundrilling

Importance of Precision
This step is crucial for manufacturing heating platens. Due to the size and thickness, such materials often have long delivery times from the mill. Replacing the material is critical, so caution and precision are necessary, as mistakes are unacceptable.

Drilling Process
Platens are gundrilled to create channels inside them for the hot oil to flow through. Three drill heads are used to drill simultaneously, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.

04

Welding Inserts

Welding Process
Inserts are welded to close and connect the channels for oil flow. Welders follow specific steps to ensure even heat distribution during welding. Quality assurance is paramount to prevent leaks and ensure the welds are of high quality.

Final Machining

Surface Finishing
Once the channels are closed, all sides are machined to meet the required surface roughness specifications:

  • General surface: 1.6 Rz
  • Wear plates: Ra 2.2

Prime and Paint

Coating Process
Heating platens are coated with high-heat aluminum paint. Thermal transfer products are applied to the mating surfaces of the heating platen and wear plates. Finally, lubricants are applied to the working surfaces to ensure smooth operation.

Assembly and Packaging

Assembly
Heating platens and wear plates are assembled with all the components required to minimize further assembly on site.

Packaging
Packaging is tailored to meet the transportation and storage conditions, depending on the destination of the platens.

Refurbish Materials

Arrival and Inspection
Upon arrival, inspect and document the actual condition of the platens. Since the platens might have been exposed to harsh weather conditions, assessing how much work is required to refurbish them is essential.

02

Planer Mill

Straightening and Rough Machining
As platens may no longer be perfectly flat when they arrive, we perform rough machining to ensure at least one side is leveled before proceeding to the next steps.

03

Repairs

Welding Repair
Repair or replace attached blocks and components as needed.

Channel Flushing
Flush channels by running oil through the platen at 50 bar to remove any rust or debris inside.

04

Final Machining
